Heavyweights

Fedor Emelianenko

Streak: 26 wins
Record: 28-1-1
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Nogueira, Filipovic, Randleman, Coleman, Hunt, Lindland, Sylvia

It's hard to imagine a top 10 list of anything that wouldn't feature Fedor's name at the top. Although he had been somewhat inactive prior to the Sylvia fight, his ease of victory and unmatched skill set put him in this top spot. His past wins over Mirko Filipovic, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and just about every other big guy in the game help to assist his recent downturn in competition. The less than a minute it took him to finish off the former UFC champ was one of the most impressive feats the sport has seen.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Streak: 3 wins
Record: 34-4-1
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Coleman, Herring, Henderson, Barnett, Sylvia

Minotauro, the UFC's newest champion, slides easily into this second place spot with his win over Tim Sylvia. A wizard off his back, Nogueira represents a very different but no less successful crop of heavyweights just as comfortable on the ground as throwing bombs. Big Nog hasn't lost since October of 2006, making it difficult to consider him any less than second best.

Andrei Arlovski

Streak: 4 wins
Record: 13-5
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Sylvia, Werdum, Rothwell

Thrown off the title path by consecutive losses to Sylvia and a contract dispute, Arlovski recently got back on track with a TKO victory over Ben Rothwell at an Affliction event. The "Pitbull" hasn't lost since 2006, his mouth guard looks like vampire fangs, and he's dating a Playboy model: definitely top-five material. Couture's inactivity helps Arlovski claim this spot.

Josh Barnett

Streak: 3 wins
Record: 26-5
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Couture, Hunt, Nogueira

There's little disagreement that Barnett is probably one of the two most talented fighters on this list. When there's a discussion of who could potentially beat Fedor, Barnett's name usually comes up. But when you don't fight for over a year and then take on a no-name for World Victory Road, you can't expect much love. Even with the recent win in Affliction, Barnett will need to do more to climb the ladder.

Randy Couture

Streak: 2 wins
Record: 16-8
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Belfort, Liddell, Ortiz, Sylvia

"The Natural" could have made a run at that No. 3 or 4 spot, but his inactivity and unwillingness to honor his contract have hurt his standing. Wins over Tim Sylvia and Gabriel Gonzaga were proof Couture still belongs among the sport's elite fighters. Nogueira gets the nod over Couture because of the Sylvia fight. Nogueira won by submission, while Couture beat Sylvia by decision. Barnett and Arlovski have simply been more active.

Fabricio Werdum

Streak: 2 wins
Record: 11-3-1
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Gonzaga, Vera, A. Emelianenko

Werdum is still fighting for respect. The former Pride star balanced a win over Gonzaga with a lackluster loss to Arlovski. Werdum looked excellent, however, against Brandon Vera and is ready to continue his climb.

Frank Mir

Streak: 2 wins
Record: 11-3
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Sylvia, Lesnar

Mir refused to be the showcase opponent for Brock Lesnar, expertly submitting the young star in the first round. Mir will finally get his long awaited title shot against Nogueira sometime next year.

Gabriel Gonzaga

Streak: 1 win
Record: 9-3
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Filipovic

After his shocking KO of Cro Cop, Gonzaga was the darling of the heavyweight division, even being included in the beating Fedor discussion. A valiant loss against Couture and a bad loss to Werdum brought "Napao" back down to earth, but his skill and quality of opponents still warrants him a spot on this list.

Mirko Filipovic

Streak: 1 win
Record: 23-6-2
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: W. Silva, Barnett, Sakuraba

PRIDE's prodigal son was beaten by two UFC mid carders before he dropped to the minor leagues and picked up a nominal win. Until "Cro Cop" starts picking off quality opponents, he'll continue his slide down and out of the top 10. Lucky for him, it's not a strong division.

Tim Sylvia

Streak: 2 losses
Record: 26-6
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Arlovski, Vera

Despite having beaten Arlovski twice, Sylvia finds respect tough to come by. Sylvia sandwiched two losses around a victory over Brandon Vera and looked downright confused in both. The quick loss to Fedor didn't help much either. He's a powerful guy with a good style, but may be destined to be very good instead of great.

 MMA Madness' Rules of Rankings

1.) For a fighter to be ranked, he must have:
* fought within the last two years

2.) For a fighter to be ranked in a new division, he must have:
* declared his intention to move divisions (ex: Dan Henderson)
* fought two consecutive fights at the new weight (ex: Hayato Sakurai)

3.) A fighter shall not be ranked at two weights
* He is ranked at the old weight until one of the two examples under #2 occurs

4.) Rankings will not rely on transitive properties
* ex: Alves beat Hughes, Hughes beat GSP, thus Alves beat GSP is not acceptable logic

5.) Rankings are based on a full body of work & strength of schedule, not just the last fight
* ex: Michael Bisping has just two wins at MW, but his resume includes a win on The Ultimate Fighter and a win over Matt Hamill (full body)
* ex: Matt Hughes has lost two of three (as of 6/08), however, that slump would not drop him as far as a younger fighter who lost two of three (full body)
* ex: Additionally, Hughes' losses have been to top competitors, so losses to GSP and Alves don't hurt as much as another fighters loss to Mike Swick (strength of schedule)
